Introduction:
What comes to mind when you think of Romeo and Juliet? Is it Shakespeare, high school English class, romance, or Leonardo DiCaprio? Whatever it may be, today lets focus on the origins of Romeo and Juliet:
Long ago, in 1597 William Shakespeare published the iconic love story known as Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare is usually assumed to be the original writer of Romeo and Juliet, but that is a common misconception and actually false. Although the exact date of the original story of Romeo and Juliet written is unknown, it has been existent in the literature world for over hundreds of years! Since the beginning of 1531, there have been multiple writers who have adopted and transformed the story of Romeo and Juliet, long before Shakespeare even knew what Romeo and Juliet was. While each transformation of the iconic story has held onto similar themes or characters, there still remains major transformations between each version. Though the transformations may seem minuscule to an average reader, each one is key in allowing the writers to have their very own and unique creations. |
