Luigi da Porto:
The legend of Romeo and Juliet was not officially recorded until the early
fourteenth century in Verona, Italy during the year 1530, by Luigi da Porto. His
novel was translated from Italian and was titled Historia Novellamente Ritrovata
di due Nobili Amanti, meaning Newly Found Story of Two Noble Lovers. Da
Porto took inspiration from a writer named Masuccio Saleritano and changed
the names of the two main characters in his story from Marriotto and Gianozza
to Romeus and Giulietta, therefore creating Romeo and Juliet. Da Porto also
used his inspiration to transfer the story of Romeo and Juliet to Verona, Italy.
Like mentioned, in his version da Porto renames the lovers Romeus and
Giulietta, as well as specifies a feud between the Montecchi and the Cappelletti.
In his version, Romeus takes a poison while Giulietta awakens in time to speak
with him before he dies, causing her to commit suicide by holding her breath.
After this tragedy, the feuding families reconcile. From here on, all of the
settings are in Verona, Italy which is a major similarity between the different
versions.
